Phillips Sonicare for Kids App

Phillips Sonicare wanted to build an experience with their electric toothbrushes that would compel kids to proactively brush each day and learn proper brushing techniques. Our app harnessed the latest in Bluetooth connectivity when it was still a relatively new technology. Crafting the user journey was a puzzle waiting to be solved. I conducted in-home interviews with kids and parents to narrow down the design direction and eventual concept for the original character. I developed a strategy for gamification and reward systems and delivered the approved vision & strategy to our client. The UI design was handed off to others on my team, while I switched gears to set the tone and then model the Unity 3D backgrounds for the character environments.

 

Gamification Strategy

For this project, I created initial character design sketches to test with kids and parents in their homes, discovering what they would react to and learning more about their morning and evening routines.

Based on weeks of research to target the right ages and archetypes (kids and parents), I also crafted our initial gamification and reward strategy.

Through research, we found key moments to engage kids to want to brush, while not conflicting with parents' rules around screen time.

I crafted a vision for our reward system that leveraged 60 days to form a habit and gave kids a mix of consumables and durable items to compel them to return each day.

My initial proposals helped us to estimate the scope for the initial MVP with our clients, and what assets we would need to create for an initial launch of the product.

3D modeling and Unity integration

Once the strategic plan was detailed and User Research conducted, I was transitioned to provide UX specs to the UI designers, and to begin prototyping the 3D environments for the app. Once the direction was approved, I built out the final 3d backgrounds for the app and integrated them into Unity. Kids could earn these backgrounds as part of the gamification.

I worked closely with 2 animators in the studio, contributing technical knowledge to help explore ways we could texture the character.

I also troubleshot the right lighting and settings to apply to the assets in unity that would match the style and mood.

The Results:

So cute! The product is a high-ranking and proven to work!! I can’t wait to brush MY teeth!
